Airdrop season is currently underway, with various apps, protocols, and projects taking advantage of the impending bear market to distribute their tokens and potentially reward numerous crypto users. But what exactly is an airdrop in the world of cryptocurrencies?
When it comes to crypto tokens, an airdrop is typically a method used by a project to incentivize and reward its early users and contributors by granting them a portion of a newly launched token. This process also serves to distribute the tokens widely for decentralized governance.
Saga Protocol
Saga is a novel blockchain network primarily tailored for gaming purposes. The SAGA airdrop, launched on March 6, allowed users to earn a share of the new token by participating in “play-to-airdrop” campaigns across several games. Those who staked native currencies of platforms like Avalanche, Cosmos, Celestia, and Ethereum scaler Polygon during specific timeframes were eligible for the drop.
Notcoin
Notcoin, a gaming project operating within the Telegram messaging app, attracted over 26 million players who engaged in mining virtual coins. Notcoin plans to transition these virtual coins into real crypto tokens on The Open Network (TON) shortly, rewarding players based on the coins mined. The project has initiated purging inactive accounts’ accumulated coins and has commenced pre-market trading for large quantities of coins.

BloodLoop
BloodLoop, an Overwatch-style hero shooter on Avalanche, kicked off its play-to-airdrop campaign on March 4. Players who engage with the game and complete quests could potentially earn millions of BLS tokens through weekly competitions.
Shuffle
Crypto casino Shuffle is planning three successive airdrops for its SHFL token on Ethereum to reward users from its inaugural year of operation. The platform will debut a token sale via a liquidity bootstrapping pool on March 10, with 28% of its token supply allocated for airdrops.

AI Arena, a game combining Super Smash Bros-style combat with AI technology, launched a play-to-airdrop campaign with a whopping 40 million NRN tokens up for grabs. The game challenges players to train AI combatants for automatic battles.

On the WAX blockchain, WUFFI is a gaming meme coin set to airdrop as WUF tokens. The project, which conducted a snapshot of eligible holders on January 31, has garnered support from several WAX games and apps for the upcoming token distribution.
