Purdue Boilermakers’ Coach Defends Canadian Star Zach Edey

Following Canadian Zach Edey and the No. 1 seed Purdue Boilermakers securing their spot in the NCAA March Madness Sweet 16 after a decisive victory over No. 8 Utah State, head coach Matt Painter staunchly defended his seven-foot-four star player.

Impressive Tournament Performances

Throughout the two tournament games, the 21-year-old Edey accumulated 54 points and 35 rebounds, with Purdue dominating both matchups by 28 and 39 points, respectively. In the recent game against Utah State, the Toronto native contributed 23 points and 14 rebounds, remarkable statistics that could have been higher had he not been subbed out early in the second half. Notably, Edey’s standout performance in the tournament opener against Grambling State included a rare 30-point, 20-rebound display, a feat not seen since 1995.

Painter’s Firm Defense

Painter, who has guided Edey throughout all four of his college seasons, emphasized the significant influence the senior Canadian has had on the team’s success by achieving a 105-28 record together. The coach’s first-hand experience of Edey’s progression from a good player three years ago to a dominant force on the court showcases the player’s remarkable growth and capabilities. Painter’s confidence in Edey’s abilities is evident as he sets high expectations for the player, leading to laughter from others but ultimately showcasing Edey’s potential.

Painter further highlighted Edey’s intelligence, coachability, and exceptional physical skills, praising the player’s overall contribution to the team’s performance.

Upcoming Challenge

Looking ahead, Edey and the Boilermakers will aim to silence any remaining skeptics as they prepare to face No. 5 Gonzaga, led by Canadian Ryan Nembhard, in the Sweet 16 clash in Detroit. This crucial matchup will provide yet another opportunity for Edey to showcase his prowess on the court and reinforce Painter’s unwavering support for the talented player.
