Washington Commanders Retire Darrell Green’s Jersey

When Josh Harris acquired the Washington Commanders last year, he immediately reached out to Darrell Green, a player he admired while growing up. As a result, it comes as no surprise that Green’s jersey will be the first one retired under Harris’ ownership. The Commanders recently revealed that Green will join the ranks of Sammy Baugh, Bobby Mitchell, Sonny Jurgensen, and Sean Taylor as the fifth player in franchise history to have his number retired. Green, known for wearing No. 28, spent his entire 20-year NFL career with Washington.

Expressing his gratitude for this honor, Green stated, “It means a ton to me. I never thought about this, never dreamed about it, never asked about it, whatever. But when it was spoken to me, it blew me away. It caught me. It touched something down on the inside of me that I didn’t know was there. So now I’m very humbled by this, but this is huge. This is a big deal, and I’m grateful for that.”

Inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2008, Green holds multiple NFL records, including most games played by a defender (295) and most consecutive seasons with an interception (19). Known for his speed, Green was named an Associated Press All-Pro three times and a Pro Bowler seven times. He was a key player on two Super Bowl-winning teams.

Washington Commanders surprised Green with the retirement announcement while he was at the team’s facility filming a public service announcement. Following the reveal, a ceremony honoring Green will take place during one of Washington’s home games this season. No player has worn No. 28 since Green’s retirement in 2002.

Josh Harris, the team’s owner, emphasized the significance of retiring Green’s jersey, highlighting his exemplary qualities. Harris stated, “Darrell Green’s legacy transcends the boundaries of the football field. Throughout his remarkable career, Green embodied the values of excellence, perseverance, and sportsmanship on and off the field.”

Green is set to announce the team’s first of two second-round picks at the upcoming NFL draft in Detroit, marking a special moment in the midst of a new era for the Commanders. Since Harris took over ownership, many former players, like Green, have reengaged with the team, attending games and practices, signaling a positive shift in the organization’s atmosphere.

Conclusion

Darrell Green’s contributions to the Washington Commanders have left an indelible mark on the franchise’s history. By retiring his jersey, the team not only honors Green’s exceptional career but also underscores its commitment to preserving the legacy of iconic players. Green’s impact, both on and off the field, serves as an enduring source of inspiration for current and future generations of Commanders players, coaches, and fans.
