Discord’s Shift Towards Sponsored Quests: An Evolution in Ad Strategy

Discord, a prominent platform widely known for its stance against ads, has recently made a significant shift by introducing Sponsored Quests to allow video game manufacturers to advertise to its users. This move marks a pivotal departure from Discord’s prior business approach, although it appears less intrusive compared to ads found on other social media platforms. Sponsored Quests were first unveiled on March 7, with Peter Sellis, Discord’s Senior Vice President of Product, announcing their imminent arrival in a blog post. Sponsored Quests incentivize PC gamers with in-game rewards for inviting friends to observe their gameplay via Discord streaming. Swaleha Carlson, Discord’s Senior Product Communications Manager, confirmed to Ars Technica that Sponsored Quests are set to launch this week.

The primary objective behind Sponsored Quests is to enhance the visibility of video games among a broader audience, essentially serving as a form of marketing. A slide displayed by Discord to game developers, as reported by The Wall Street Journal (WSJ), emphasizes the strategy of getting games in front of players and consequently integrating them into their social circles.

Targeted Advertising Strategies

Discord plans to customize ads based on users’ age, geographical location, and gaming preferences. These ads will be positioned at the bottom-left corner of the screen, with users having the option to opt out of personalized ads for activities or data shared with Discord. Moreover, users can choose to conceal specific promotions related to quests or games they are not interested in.

Discord previously piloted ads with Lucasfilm Games and Epic Games, offering users Star Wars-themed items in Fortnite for engaging in specific gameplay. This innovative advertising model received positive feedback, indicating potential for future expansion and collaboration with various game developers.
