Humanity’s Connection to Water: A Message of Hope on NASA’s Europa Clipper

In October 2024, NASA’s Europa Clipper spacecraft is set to embark on a groundbreaking mission to Jupiter’s moon Europa. Among its cargo, the spacecraft carries a laser-etched message that symbolizes humanity’s intimate relationship with water. This message is a tribute to the legacy of past NASA missions that have conveyed similar messages into the depths of space.

As the president of Messaging Extraterrestrial Intelligence, or METI, International, I was intimately involved in crafting the message that will journey with Clipper to Europa. Collaborating with esteemed linguists Sheri Wells-Jensen and Laura Buszard-Welcher, we meticulously curated audio recordings in 103 languages. These recordings were then translated into visually striking waveforms and engraved onto a metal plate that shields the spacecraft from Jupiter’s harsh radiation.

Celebrating a Tradition of Cosmic Communication

The practice of inscribing messages onto spacecraft is not new, and Clipper’s message carries on a legacy that began with astronomer Carl Sagan. In the 1970s, early spacecraft missions like Pioneer and Voyager embarked on interstellar journeys with engraved metal plaques and phonograph records that showcased humanity’s scientific knowledge and cultural diversity. The message aboard Clipper is an extension of this tradition, paying tribute to the pioneers of space exploration.

The Significance of Water in the Search for Life Beyond Earth

Water, the cradle of life on Earth, remains a central focus of NASA’s exploration efforts. The presence of subsurface oceans on Europa has piqued astronomers’ interest, as it elevates the moon as a potential habitat for extraterrestrial life. The word “water” expressed in 103 languages serves as a poignant reminder of the universal importance of this life-sustaining substance.

Each waveform representing the word “water” embodies a personal connection to this vital element. Contributors from diverse backgrounds, such as a music festival organizer in Uzbekistan and an exoplanet hunter in Catalonia, lent their voices to this cosmic symphony of water.

From Frank Drake’s Equation to the Water Hole

The Europa Clipper message also honors the legacy of astronomer Frank Drake, the pioneer of the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI). The inclusion of Drake’s eponymous equation on the spacecraft’s plate embodies humanity’s quest to understand our place in the cosmos.

Furthermore, the depiction of the hydrogen and hydroxyl lines, key components in the formation of water, serves as a nod to the foundational principles of chemistry. Scientists hope that future generations encountering this message will recognize these elemental signatures and unravel the mysteries of the universe.

METI’s Dedication to Cosmic Communication

Funded by METI International, the creation of the water words message and the visualization of scientific concepts like the water hole were labors of love aimed at fostering cross-temporal dialogue. By transcending linguistic barriers and scientific frontiers, this message encapsulates humanity’s enduring curiosity about the cosmos.

As the Europa Clipper hurtles towards its destination, it carries with it a message that transcends space and time, symbolizing our collective yearning to explore the unknown and connect with the mysteries of the universe. The spacecraft’s arrival in Jupiter’s orbit in April 2030 heralds a new chapter in humanity’s quest for cosmic understanding.
