Former US Attorney Rachael Rollins Faces Further Legal Trouble

A former U.S. attorney, who stepped down in the midst of a Department of Justice inquiry into unethical behavior and was previously endorsed by Joe Biden and the Democratic Party, has encountered fresh challenges recently.

Accomplished prosecutor Rachael Rollins was compelled to resign from her post in Massachusetts in May after a corruption investigation was initiated by the Department of Justice, according to a report by WBUR. A year later, she suffered another setback as her law license was revoked.

Rollins initially garnered praise when she was nominated by the Biden administration in July 2021, with senators Ed Markey and Elizabeth Warren applauding her as an exceptional choice, eager to support her candidacy. The senators highlighted Rollins’ advocacy for criminal justice reform and efforts to address systemic issues such as poverty, substance abuse, and racial disparities.

Media outlets also championed Rollins’ appointment to a key position in the legal realm, citing her as a transformative figure in the criminal justice landscape. However, her tenure was short-lived as allegations of misconduct surfaced, leading to her resignation amidst a cloud of controversy.

The Department of Justice accused Rollins of misusing her authority by leaking confidential information to manipulate an election in favor of a Democratic candidate, Ricardo Arroyo. Additionally, she was found to have provided false information to federal investigators, leading to a loss of credibility and trust.

Despite the severity of these allegations, Rollins managed to evade prosecution by resigning from her post. However, the Massachusetts Office of Bar Counsel conducted its own investigation, resulting in the suspension of her law license due to non-payment of fees. This decision was subsequently upheld by the state Supreme Judicial Court.

Following her resignation, Rollins secured a position at Roxbury Community College, where she currently serves as a special projects administrator with an annual salary of $96,000. This pattern of ousted Democratic officials securing lucrative positions post-resignation raises questions about accountability and consequences for unethical behavior.
