Emergence of MMA Star Kayla Harrison

Renowned UFC champion Amanda Nunes played a pivotal role in attracting Kayla Harrison to American Top Team, a move that initiated Harrison’s transition from judo to mixed martial arts (MMA) after the 2016 Rio Olympics. Harrison’s introduction to the training center involved a sparring session with Nunes, compelling her to relocate to Florida for elite training. Nunes’ retirement in June post her victory at UFC 289 created a void in the women’s bantamweight division, prompting MMA coach Mike Brown, who has mentored Harrison at ATT since her arrival, to predict her capability to excel.

Recognition of Harrison’s Potential

Upon Harrison’s arrival at the Coconut Creek, Fla. training facility, Brown was well-informed of her judo achievements. He acknowledged her immense potential for MMA success, underscoring the uncertainty surrounding individuals’ reactions to facing combat. Harrison’s unfaltering resolve and resolute nature in the face of adversity impressed Brown, affirming her innate fighting spirit.

Swift Rise to Prominence

Swiftly transitioning to MMA, Harrison signed with the World Series of Fighting (later rebranded as the Professional Fighters League) in 2016 and commenced training at ATT in 2017. Her PFL debut in June 2018 showcased her prowess with a decisive submission victory over Brittney Elkin in a mere 3:18. Subsequent triumphs over Jozette Cotton and Moriel Charneski affirmed her dominance within the sport, culminating in her undefeated record of 3-0 by the close of 2018. Harrison’s triumph over Larissa Pacheco at PFL 11 on New Year’s Eve the following year secured her status as the PFL lightweight champion.
