NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell Discusses Potential Changes to League Structure
The NFL may be undergoing significant changes in the near future, according to Commissioner Roger Goodell. In a recent interview on “The Pat McAfee Show,” Goodell unveiled his vision for the league, which includes the possibility of an expanded regular-season schedule, a Super Bowl on Presidents Day weekend, and an increase in international games.
Potential Changes to the Regular Season
One of the most notable proposals put forth by Goodell is the idea of transitioning to an 18-game regular season, coupled with a reduction in the number of preseason games. Currently, the NFL operates on a 17-game regular season structure, which was introduced in 2021. Goodell expressed his dissatisfaction with the current preseason format, suggesting that fans share his sentiment.
“I think we’re good at 17 now,” Goodell stated. “But, listen, we’re looking at how we continue. I’m not a fan of the preseason.”
Goodell highlighted his preference for quality over quantity, advocating for the replacement of preseason games with additional meaningful regular-season matchups. The implementation of an 18-game regular season could potentially necessitate the addition of a second bye week for teams.
Furthermore, Goodell envisions a future in which the Super Bowl becomes a centerpiece of the Presidents Day weekend, with the game taking place on Sunday night and providing fans with a holiday on Monday.
International Expansion
In addition to modifications to the regular-season schedule, Goodell disclosed plans for increased international engagement. He expressed interest in potentially hosting up to 16 regular-season games in international markets within the next decade. The NFL is actively pursuing expansion into new territories, with Brazil and Spain identified as upcoming destinations.
While contemplating the prospect of establishing a team or division overseas, Goodell remained cautious, suggesting such a move may be more than a decade away. The logistics of international franchise operations present complex challenges that would need to be addressed through careful planning and negotiation.
Ultimately, any alterations to the NFL’s structure, including changes to the length of the season or expansion into international markets, would require collaboration with the NFL Players Association. The delicate balance between player welfare, competitive balance, and financial considerations must be navigated to ensure the long-term sustainability and growth of the league.
