Nashville Predators: A Season in Review
Heading into the 2023-24 season, there was uncertainty surrounding the Nashville Predators. General Manager Barry Trotz had made significant moves in the offseason, including parting ways with veteran centers Matt Duchene and Ryan Johansen. Andrew Brunette stepped in as the new head coach, ushering in a new era for the team.
The Predators found themselves oscillating in the middle of the pack for much of the season until a crushing 9-2 defeat at the hands of the Dallas Stars on February 15. In the aftermath of this loss, the team made a pivotal decision to forgo a planned trip to see U2 at the Sphere in Las Vegas. This choice seemed to ignite a spark within the team, propelling them to an impressive 18-game point streak.
However, this streak was recently halted with back-to-back lopsided defeats against the Arizona Coyotes (8-4) and the Colorado Avalanche (7-4). As they gear up to face the Boston Bruins on Tuesday night, the Predators are aiming to regain their momentum and secure a spot on the right side of the standings.
Playoff Contention and Projections
Looking ahead, the burning question remains: How far can the Predators climb in the standings? If they manage to win all their remaining games, they will finish with 106 points. While trailing behind the Dallas Stars (103 points) and the Avalanche (100 points), the Predators have a shot at surpassing the Winnipeg Jets, who currently hold 96 points.
With seven games left in the regular season, six of which are against teams outside playoff contention, the Predators have a favorable schedule. Their ultimate test will come against the struggling Jets, who are in the midst of a rough patch with a 4-5-1 record in their last ten games.
Statistical models project a close race between the Predators and the Jets, with the Jets holding a slight edge in points and playoff seeding probabilities. However, the door remains open for Nashville to make a late surge and secure a higher playoff position.
