Russian Cosmonauts set for Spacewalk outside ISS
Today, on April 25, two Russian cosmonauts, Oleg Kononenko and Nikolai Chub, are scheduled to undertake a spacewalk outside the International Space Station (ISS). The event is set to commence around 10:55 a.m. EDT and will involve configuring hardware and installing experiments on the Roscosmos segment of the space station, as reported by NASA officials.
The spacewalk will mark the second for Chub and the seventh for Kononenko. The pair previously conducted an extravehicular activity together in October 2023, focusing on inspecting a leaky radiator on the exterior of Russia’s Nauka module. Both cosmonauts launched to the ISS in September 2023 aboard a Soyuz spacecraft that also transported NASA astronaut Loral O’Hara, initiating the first spaceflight for Chub and O’Hara and the fifth for Kononenko.
Kononenko boasts an impressive spacefaring record, having accumulated 957 days in space as of today, more than any other individual in history.
Other Developments in Human Spaceflight Today
Notably, China is poised to launch the Shenzhou 18 astronaut mission to its Tiangong space station at 8:59 a.m. EDT. Additionally, NASA astronauts Suni Williams and Butch Wilmore are expected to arrive at Kennedy Space Center (KSC) in Florida in preparation for their May 6 launch to the ISS aboard Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft, marking the craft’s inaugural crewed flight.
