The Great Solar Eclipse of 2017: A Spectacular Cosmic Event

Before delving into the upcoming total solar eclipse on April 8th, it is worth reminiscing about the awe-inspiring phenomenon that graced the skies on August 21, 2017. Dubbed the Great American Eclipse, this celestial event spanned a width of 71 miles (115 kilometers) and cast its shadow across 14 states, ranging from Oregon to South Carolina. With an estimated 215 million Americans viewing the eclipse either in person or through electronic means, it became a momentous occasion in the history of celestial events.

A Personal Encounter with the Eclipse

Nestled in the High Desert of Central Oregon, my humble cabin in the town of Sisters provided the perfect vantage point to witness the celestial ballet unfold. Accompanied by my loyal English Setters, Balen, and Copper, I awaited the transformation of day into night. Just 40 miles (64 km) north, the city of Madras found itself at the heart of the eclipse’s shadow zone, drawing eclipse enthusiasts from near and far to witness this rare occurrence.

Months prior to the eclipse, area residents were cautioned about the potential gridlock that would ensue as a myriad of scientists, astronomers, and eclipse aficionados descended upon Oregon. The anticipation and excitement reached a fever pitch as individual estimates predicted an influx of up to 200,000 additional individuals from the Portland metro areas, converging on the state’s heartland.

Preparing for the Celestial Spectacle

As the dawn of the eclipse approached, the skies remained true to the forecast, painting a canvas of vibrant blue. After tending to my canine companions, I indulged in a specially prepared “Total Solar Eclipse” blackberry waffle breakfast to fortify myself for the impending celestial display. Donning approved eclipse eyewear, the dogs appeared unfazed by the impending celestial spectacle.

Having experienced previous solar eclipses in Thailand and Hawaii, I was no stranger to the magic of totality. From a poolside vantage point in Thailand to a boat deck off the coast of Maui, each eclipse left an indelible mark on my soul. However, the prospect of witnessing the 2017 eclipse from my backyard, just at the threshold of totality, beckoned me with a sense of tranquility and familiarity that I couldn’t resist.

The Moment of Totality

As the moon’s shadow crept across the sun, devouring its radiant face in measured increments, a palpable sense of anticipation filled the air. The arrival of totality signaled a transformative moment, as if the universe itself had paused to reveal its hidden splendor. The ethereal glow of the sun’s corona emerged, casting a luminous spectacle upon the land.

In those fleeting moments of totality, a profound stillness enveloped the landscape, interrupted only by the restless chirping of birds seeking refuge. The sudden drop in temperature and the eerie twilight that descended lent an otherworldly ambiance to the scene, captivating all who bore witness to this cosmic ballet.

Reflections and Anticipation

As swiftly as it came, totality receded, relinquishing its hold on the sun and returning daylight to the world. Gazing upon my tranquil Setters, one peacefully napping and the other playfully attempting to consume his eclipse glasses, I marveled at the transient beauty that had unfolded before us.

While Oregon may not lie in the path of totality for the upcoming eclipse on April 8th, the partial eclipse visible at 37% promises another opportunity to witness the celestial dance. As I prepare to once again share this experience with my canine companions, I am reminded of the enduring wonder that eclipses evoke and the memories they etch in our hearts.
