Trump VP Candidate Crumbles During CNN Interview

North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum, a potential vice presidential candidate for former President Donald Trump, faced a challenging moment as he attempted to defend Trump’s stance on the ongoing hush money trial during a recent interview on CNN.

Questioning Trump’s Comparison to the Gestapo

Host Jake Tapper wasted no time in confronting Burgum about Trump’s recent comparison of President Joe Biden to the Gestapo, the infamous Nazi secret police. Tapper directly asked Burgum if he was comfortable with Trump’s inflammatory remarks, putting the governor on the spot.

Burgum sidestepped the question, opting to highlight Trump’s unscripted remarks and suggesting that if an election were held today, Trump would emerge victorious. He downplayed the significance of Trump’s Gestapo reference, attributing it to the former president’s frustration with what he perceives as a politically motivated trial.

Unpacking Burgum’s Defense

As Tapper pressed Burgum further, the governor’s attempt to defend Trump’s actions fell flat. Burgum pivoted from alleging political bias in the trial to arguing that Trump’s supposed misdemeanors should not be escalated to felony charges, suggesting they were mere business errors.

Tapper countered Burgum’s claims with survey data indicating that a significant portion of Americans believe Trump may have committed a crime or acted unethically in the case. He challenged Burgum on whether a potential felony conviction for Trump would affect his support for the former president.

A Failed Narrative

Following the interview, it became evident that Burgum’s chances of securing a spot as Trump’s running mate had dwindled significantly. The governor found himself in the unenviable position of defending a narrative that contradicted public opinion and overlooked the gravity of Trump’s alleged offenses.

Trump’s selective retelling of the trial’s narrative, focusing on victimhood rather than accountability, posed a significant challenge for Burgum and underscored the magnitude of Trump’s legal troubles. Any attempts to downplay or dismiss these challenges were bound to fall short in the face of public scrutiny.
