Minnesota Vikings Sign Quarterback Sam Darnold to One-Year Deal
The Minnesota Vikings have reached an agreement with quarterback Sam Darnold on a one-year contract, sources have confirmed. This move comes as the Vikings were in need of a new quarterback following Kirk Cousins’ departure to the Atlanta Falcons on a four-year deal.
Darnold, who has previously played for the New York Jets and Carolina Panthers, joined the San Francisco 49ers last season on a one-year contract with the aim of honing his skills under coach Kyle Shanahan and proving himself as a potential starting quarterback.
During his time in San Francisco, Darnold secured the backup quarterback position behind starter Brock Purdy. This led to a trade that saw Trey Lance being sent to the Dallas Cowboys. Darnold saw playing time in 10 games, primarily in backup roles, throwing for 297 yards with 2 touchdowns and an interception.
His opportunity to start came in the final game of the season against the Los Angeles Rams, where he completed 16-of-26 passes for 189 yards and a touchdown in a close 21-20 loss.
Once the No. 3 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft by the Jets, Darnold spent three seasons in New York before being traded to the Panthers in 2021. News of his signing with the Vikings was first reported by the NFL Network.
