Red Bull Racing’s Adrian Newey to Step Down in 2025
Renowned designer Adrian Newey, who played a pivotal role in Red Bull’s Formula One dominance, is set to step down early next year, as announced by the team. Having spent nearly two decades with Red Bull, the 65-year-old Newey will bid farewell in the first quarter of 2025.
Newey expressed his sentiments regarding the significant milestone, stating, “For almost two decades it has been my great honor to have played a key role in Red Bull Racing’s progress from upstart newcomer to multiple title-winning team. However, I feel now is an opportune moment to hand that baton over to others and to seek new challenges for myself.”
Joining Red Bull in 2006, Newey’s exceptional contributions have led to the team clinching seven drivers’ titles, which includes the last three seasons won by defending champion Max Verstappen, as well as securing six constructors’ titles.
Red Bull has confirmed that its chief technical officer will be shifting focus from Formula One design to spearheading the creation of its inaugural hypercar, the RB17.
End of an Era
Red Bull team principal Christian Horner reflected on Newey’s departure, acknowledging the fundamental role he played in the team’s success. Horner stated, “All of our greatest moments from the past 20 years have come with Adrian’s hand on the technical tiller. For me, when Adrian joined Red Bull, he was already a superstar designer. Two decades and 13 championships later he leaves as a true legend. He is also my friend and someone I will be eternally grateful to for everything he brought to our partnership.”
The news of Newey’s impending exit is anticipated to trigger significant interest from other teams vying for his expertise. With Newey free to join a rival team post his departure from Red Bull, he could potentially influence the design of the 2026 car for his new employers. This strategic move aligns with the upcoming regulations overhaul in 2026, offering a substantial advantage to teams that secure Newey’s services.
Newey’s decision to step down coincides with allegations of “inappropriate behavior” leveled against Christian Horner by a female employee. Following an investigation by Red Bull’s parent company GmbH, Horner was cleared of any wrongdoing and has continuously refuted the allegations.
