Canadian Teenager Advances in Wimbledon Qualifying Tournament

Marina Stakusic, a 19-year-old tennis player from Mississauga, Ont., had an impressive performance in the Wimbledon women’s qualifying tournament. She secured a convincing 6-0, 6-1 victory over France’s Carole Monnet on Tuesday.

Stakusic displayed remarkable dominance on the court, winning nine consecutive games before Monnet managed to score, making it 3-1 in the second set. Undeterred, Stakusic swiftly regained control by winning the next three games. She concluded the match in just over an hour, serving to love in the final game.

Throughout the match, the Canadian showcased her strong defensive skills by saving the only break point she faced. Additionally, Stakusic capitalized on her opportunities by breaking Monnet’s serve five times out of 10 chances.

With this victory, Stakusic advances to the second round, where she is set to face 16th seed Chloe Paquet from France. As she aims to qualify for her first Grand Slam main draw, Stakusic will need to win three matches in total.

Other Canadian Performances in Wimbledon Qualifying

Aside from Stakusic’s success, there were other notable Canadian performances in the first round of Wimbledon qualifying. Anastasia Tikhonova of Russia defeated Carol Zhao from Richmond Hill, Ont., with a score of 1-6, 6-2, 6-4. Additionally, McCartney Kessler from the United States triumphed over Rebecca Marino from Vancouver with a score of 6-4, 6-7 (2), 6-4.

Meanwhile, in Eastbourne, England, Leylah Fernandez from Laval, Que., and Ena Shibahara from Japan faced a tough challenge in the first round of doubles action at the Rothesay International tournament. The duo was defeated 6-4, 6-3 by Laura Siegemund from Germany and Barbora Krejcikova from Czechia.

Despite this loss, Fernandez had a strong showing in singles competition, defeating Krejcikova on Monday at the Wimbledon warmup event. She is now gearing up for a second-round singles match against American Ashlyn Krueger scheduled for Wednesday.
