University of Ottawa Honorary Doctorates
The University of Ottawa has announced a distinguished list of 11 individuals who will receive honorary doctorates at its upcoming spring convocation. Among them, two standout names shine bright: Ottawa Senators legend Daniel Alfredsson and renowned sex therapist Dr. Ruth Westheimer.
Dr. Ruth Westheimer, at 96 years old, is a well-known figure in the field of sex therapy. Interestingly, her son, Joel, has been a respected professor at the University of Ottawa for over 20 years.
On the other hand, Daniel Alfredsson, a former Ottawa Senators star and current assistant coach, has been a beloved figure in the city for nearly two decades. Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2022, Alfredsson has also been active in raising awareness about mental health and substance abuse issues.
In 2016, Alfredsson was granted an honorary doctorate from Carleton University. This year, he will be receiving his doctorate from the University of Ottawa’s Faculty of Health Sciences.
Dr. Ruth will be receiving her honorary doctorate from the Faculty of Education through a video presentation on Friday. The diverse list of recipients also includes journalist Alexandra Szacka, poet Albert Dumont, former Nipissing University president Mike DeGagné, professor Deborah Diniz, scientists Sethuraman Panchanathan and Pascal Mayer, former MP Lisa Raitt, nurse Angela Cooper Brathwaite, and medical doctor Cara Tannenbaum.
