Apple TV+ Announces Renewal of “For All Mankind” and New Spinoff Series, “Star City”

Apple TV+ has unveiled plans for the future with the renewal of the popular alternate space history drama series “For All Mankind” for a fifth season and the introduction of a companion spinoff series titled “Star City”. The announcement was made by the streaming service, confirming that creators Ronald D. Moore, Matt Wolpert, and Ben Nedivi are set to helm both projects.

In a statement, Matt Cherniss, head of programming for Apple TV+, expressed excitement for the upcoming seasons, stating, “With each new installment, ‘For All Mankind’ continues to expand its captivating world and engage global audiences with its high-quality storytelling crafted by Ron, Matt, and Ben. There are endless possibilities to explore, and we, alongside our partners at Sony, are eager to delve into this next chapter of the compelling ‘For All Mankind’ universe.”

The Intriguing Premise of “For All Mankind”

“For All Mankind” initially posed the question of what the world would look like if the Soviet Union had been the first to land a man on the moon, altering the trajectory of the space race and ensuring its continuance beyond the 1960s. Over four seasons, the series has spanned four decades, presenting a timeline where space activities remain futuristic yet rooted in our past.

The fourth season, which concluded in January, centered around the inhabitants of Happy Valley, an international Mars base, and explored the competition among various companies and nations, such as the U.S., Soviet Union, and North Korea, to exploit asteroid mining opportunities. Set in 2003, the season hinted at future storylines set on Mars in 2012.

Exploring the Soviet Side in “Star City”

In addition to the renewal of “For All Mankind,” the creators will also embark on a new journey with the spinoff series “Star City,” revisiting the alternate history narrative within the Soviet space program during the 1960s.

Wolpert and Nedivi shared their enthusiasm for this new project, stating, “Our fascination with the Soviet space program has deepened over time. The concept of exploring the hidden world of the Soviet cosmonauts and engineers in Star City outside Moscow inspired us to delve into this untold story of the space race from a different perspective.”

The synopsis of “Star City” describes it as a “propulsive paranoid thriller”, offering an intriguing portrayal of the events following Soviet cosmonaut Alexei Leonov’s historic moon landing in 1969. While “For All Mankind” primarily focused on the U.S. space program, “Star City” will delve into the lives of the Soviet cosmonauts, engineers, and intelligence operatives, shedding light on their contributions to advancing humanity.

A Glimpse into the Real Star City

Named Zvyozdny gorodok (Звёздный городок) in Russian, the actual Star City began as a classified Soviet Air Force installation and has since evolved into the Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center. Located outside Moscow, this facility houses the cosmonaut corps and provides dachas (homes) for their residence, maintaining a restricted-access status since the 1960s.

Produced by Ronald D. Moore, Maril Davis, Matt Wolpert, and Ben Nedivi, “Star City” promises to offer a fresh perspective on the space race narrative, taking viewers on a thrilling journey through the untold stories of the Soviet space program.

For fans of “For All Mankind,” all four seasons are currently available for streaming worldwide on Apple TV+, with the upcoming seasons set to captivate audiences with their innovative storytelling and compelling characters.
