President Biden’s Commitment to Reopen the Port of Baltimore

President Biden promised to put the full weight of the federal government behind getting the Port of Baltimore reopened after the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapsed. Just 11 weeks later, the port is fully operational.

President Biden’s Response

In a statement, the President expressed his satisfaction with the port’s reopening:

“I made clear that my Administration would move heaven and earth to reopen the Port of Baltimore – one of our nation’s largest shipping hubs. Today, thanks to the tireless work by the men and women in the Unified Command, the full navigation channel is now open to all vessel traffic, allowing a full return of commerce to the Port of Baltimore.”

Immediately after the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, the U.S. Coast Guard sprang into action. They set up a Unified Command on the same day to assist in rescue and recovery operations. Working alongside the Army Corps of Engineers, they swiftly removed the wreckage from the channel.

The Departments of Transportation, Labor, and the Small Business Administration collaborated with federal and state partners to minimize supply chain disruptions, keeping costs down for Americans. President Biden acknowledged Governor Moore for his leadership, as well as Mayor Scott, County Executive Olszewski, and the Maryland congressional delegation for their support.

The teamwork between federal, state, and local governments, labor leaders, and the business community demonstrated what can be achieved through collaboration.

The President expressed his condolences to the families of the bridge collapse victims and assured continued support for the community throughout the recovery process.

Sec. of Transportation Pete Buttigieg’s Insights

During a press call, Secretary Buttigieg elaborated on the swift reopening of the port:

“The Biden Harris administration’s proactive measures, including the White House Supply Chains Disruptions Task Force and the FLOW data sharing program, positioned us to respond effectively to unexpected events like the bridge collapse. By sharing data with public and private partners, we monitored cargo demand shifts, aiding in supply chain adaptation.”

Secretary Buttigieg emphasized ongoing efforts to bolster supply chain resilience and support Baltimore and its workers. While acknowledging the long road to bridge reconstruction, he commended the collective efforts that led to the port’s expedited reopening.

Biden’s Competent Governance in Action

President Biden’s swift response to the Port of Baltimore crisis showcases effective governance. In contrast to the previous administration, Biden’s focus on results over drama is evident. The public must recognize and appreciate competent government, especially after the failures experienced in the past.

The early reopening of the Port of Baltimore highlights Biden’s ability to deliver on promises and drive progress.
