Calgary Stampeders Triumph in Season Opener Against Hamilton Tiger-Cats

Despite the controversy surrounding the use of microchips in footballs, Calgary Stampeders kicker Rene Paredes delivered a flawless performance in the team’s 32-24 victory over the visiting Hamilton Tiger-Cats. At 39 years old, Paredes, the longest-serving player on the team, went 6-for-6 in field goals, with his longest kick from 52 yards.

Paredes was instrumental in securing Calgary’s first win of the 2024 CFL season, contributing 20 points through accurate kicks. The CFL had announced earlier that day that teams could choose to use footballs with microchips to track real-time stats, a decision that sparked debate among players.

While Winnipeg kicker Sergio Castillo criticized the use of the chip after missing key kicks in a previous game, Paredes remained focused on his performance, refusing to disclose whether the balls he kicked were chipped or not. Calgary’s head coach, Dave Dickenson, echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of executing plays regardless of the ball’s technology.

Strong Offensive Display

Calgary’s quarterback, Jake Maier, benefited from exceptional support by his receivers, including standout performances by Clark Barnes and rookie Cam Echols, who both scored touchdowns. Maier completed 21 of 26 passes for 252 yards and two touchdowns, outshining his Hamilton counterpart, Bo Levi Mitchell.

Mitchell, a former Calgary player, faced his old team for the first time since being traded in 2022. Despite a solid performance with 300 passing yards and a touchdown, Mitchell’s efforts were not enough to secure a win for the Tiger-Cats.

Record-Breaking Victory

With the win, the Stampeders achieved their 700th victory in franchise history, solidifying their position as one of the most successful teams in the CFL. Calgary now leads all clubs in total wins, a remarkable feat that reflects the team’s rich legacy in Canadian football.

Looking ahead, the Stampeders will face the B.C. Lions on June 15, aiming to build on their strong start to the season. Meanwhile, the Tiger-Cats will return home to host the Saskatchewan Roughriders on June 16, seeking their first win of the year.
