Kansas City Chiefs Kicker Harrison Butker Delivers Controversial Commencement Address

Last weekend, Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker delivered a commencement address at Benedictine College, a Catholic private liberal arts school in Atchison, Kansas. During his speech, the three-time Super Bowl champion expressed strong views on various social and political issues, including Pride month, President Biden’s leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic, and his stance on abortion.

Butker’s Critique of Pride Month and Biden’s Leadership

Butker, known for his conservative Catholic beliefs, began his address by condemning what he referred to as “dangerous gender ideologies,” seemingly targeting Pride month, traditionally celebrated in June since the Stonewall riots in 1969. Additionally, he criticized an article discussing a shift towards conservatism in certain segments of the Catholic Church. The 28-year-old kicker also took aim at President Biden’s policies, particularly his handling of the COVID-19 crisis, which has resulted in significant loss of life in the United States.

Regarding Biden’s response to the pandemic, Butker stated, “While COVID might have played a large role throughout your formative years, it is not unique. The bad policies and poor leadership have negatively impacted major life issues. Things like abortion, IVF, surrogacy, euthanasia, as well as a growing support for the degenerate cultural values and media all stem from the pervasiveness of disorder.”

Butker’s Address to Women

During his speech, Butker also addressed the women in the audience, suggesting that their most important role should be that of “homemaker.” He asserted that women have been subjected to deceitful narratives and expressed his belief that many women find fulfillment in marriage and motherhood. Butker shared a personal anecdote about his wife Isabelle, highlighting her joy in embracing her role as a wife and mother.

The Kansas City Chiefs have refrained from commenting on Butker’s commencement address. Despite his controversial statements, Butker’s on-field performance as one of the NFL’s premier kickers speaks for itself. Notably, he holds the franchise record for the Chiefs with a 62-yard field goal and has played a crucial role in the team’s recent Super Bowl victories.

Chiefs Face Challenges in the Offseason

While Butker’s address garnered attention, the Kansas City Chiefs have faced difficulties off the field. Last month, a ballot initiative in Jackson County, Missouri, proposing funding for a downtown ballpark for the Royals and renovations to Arrowhead Stadium, the Chiefs’ home venue, was rejected by voters. Critics of the plan raised concerns about its emphasis on catering to VIPs and the affluent.

Additionally, wide receiver Rashee Rice’s involvement in a high-speed crash resulting in injuries to several individuals has tarnished the team’s reputation. Rice turned himself in to Dallas police on aggravated assault charges, following the incident. Subsequently, reports have emerged linking Rice to another assault at a nightclub, though official statements have not confirmed his involvement.

Chiefs coach Andy Reid has addressed the situation, stating that the team is allowing the legal process to unfold regarding Rice’s legal troubles. Despite these setbacks, the Chiefs continue to navigate challenges both on and off the field as they prepare for the upcoming season.
