Disney’s Space Mountain Movie Takes Shape with New Writers
Disney has been working on bringing a movie based on its iconic Space Mountain ride to the big screen for nearly four years now. Recent developments indicate that the studio is still committed to this project, as it has brought on a fresh pair of writers to refine the movie’s script and storyline.
New Writers On Board
According to a report from the Hollywood Reporter, André Nemec and Josh Appelbaum have been selected by Disney to work on the live-action adaptation of Space Mountain. Previously, the project was under the guidance of Joby Harold, who was also involved in the writing of the Obi-Wan Kenobi series.
Nemec and Appelbaum are recognized for their work on various projects, including the live-action Ninja Turtles movies and Netflix’s adaptation of Cowboy Bebop. Their collaboration extends to films such as Mission: Impossible—Ghost Protocol and television series like the CBS adaptation of Stephen King’s Zoo.
Creating a New Story
Space Mountain, a popular attraction at Disney parks worldwide since 1975, lacks a definitive narrative structure. The writers intend to draw inspiration from the ride’s theme to craft a unique storyline, similar to Disney’s approach with Pirates of the Caribbean. The recent rebranding of the ride as Star Wars: Hyperspace Mountain could also influence the development of the movie’s plot.
Disney’s Movie Adaptations
Disney has a mixed track record when it comes to translating its theme park attractions into successful films. With Nemec and Appelbaum’s fresh perspective and original storytelling, there is hope that Space Mountain could stand out as a standout entry in Disney’s cinematic universe of ride-based movies.
