Georgia Appeals Court Delays Trump’s RICO Trial
A recent development in Fulton County, Georgia, has put a hold on the election interference case against former President Donald Trump. The state Court of Appeals has issued an order staying any further work on the case until appeals are decided. This delay includes the trial Judge Scott McAfee, who had planned to continue working on the case but will now have to wait until the appeals process is completed.
The main issue at hand is whether District Attorney Fani Willis and her office should be disqualified from the case due to her romantic relationship with the outside attorney hired as a Trump special prosecutor. Additionally, the appeals court is reviewing a request from the DA’s office to reinstate six criminal counts in the racketeering indictment that were dismissed by Judge McAfee.
This delay is seen as a victory for Trump and his associates, as it means there will be no trial before the November election. This allows Trump to run for president in Georgia against Joe Biden without facing trial as a RICO defendant.
However, if Trump were to win the election, it could lead to a unique situation where a sitting President of the United States is also a defendant in a state RICO trial. In such a scenario, Trump could potentially use the Department of Justice as his legal team, with taxpayers footing the bill for his defense.
The Courts vs. The Voters
The decision by the appeals court to delay the trial further underscores the ongoing struggle to address the challenges posed by Donald Trump. Many believe that ultimately, it will be up to the voters to remove Trump from the political landscape and rid the nation of his divisive influence.
