Igor Severino Disqualified from UFC Debut for Biting Opponent
Igor Severino’s first match in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) was short-lived, being disqualified in the middle of the second round for biting opponent Andre Lima during a fight night event in Las Vegas. Severino, a 20-year-old Brazilian fighter with a record of 9-1, was released from the promotion following the incident.
The altercation occurred when both fighters were in a clinch against the cage in Round 2. Lima lifted his left arm, signaling the referee, Chris Tognoni, who then stopped the fight and called in a doctor from the Nevada State Athletic Commission to inspect Lima’s arm. The bite mark found on Lima led to the immediate termination of the bout at 2:52 of the round, marking Severino’s first career loss.
Despite Severino’s promising potential, UFC CEO Dana White decided to cut ties with him following this unsportsmanlike conduct. In a text to reporter Kevin Iole, White expressed disappointment in Severino’s actions, emphasizing that there are better ways to handle frustration in a fight than resorting to biting. White also highlighted the implications Severino faced, including losing out on a significant career opportunity and potential repercussions from the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
It was a disappointing turn of events for both fighters, as Lima, with an undefeated record of 8-0, was also making his UFC debut. The incident serves as a reminder of the high expectations and standards set by the UFC for its athletes, with behavior like Severino’s not being tolerated in the professional fighting arena.
