Northwestern’s Izzy Scane Sets Division I Women’s Lacrosse Record

On May 12, 2024, in a game against Denver during the NCAA tournament, Northwestern attacker Izzy Scane made history by breaking the Division I record for women’s lacrosse goals. Scane achieved this milestone by scoring her 359th career goal in just 81 games, surpassing Charlotte North to claim the top spot. North had previously held the record with 358 goals in 87 games while playing for Boston College and Duke from 2018 to 2022.

Originally from Michigan, Scane’s exceptional performance in the game included five goals and an assist, contributing to Northwestern’s resounding 17-4 victory. Throughout the current season, she has amassed an impressive total of 75 goals and 18 assists in 18 games.

As Northwestern aims for their second consecutive national championship and ninth overall title as a program, the team, led by Scane, is poised for success. Securing the top seed in the tournament, the Wildcats received a bye into the second round, demonstrating their strength and dominance in the sport.

Continued Dominance and Success

This significant achievement by Scane is indicative of her talent and dedication to the sport. Known for her athletic prowess and physical presence on the field, she notably recorded 99 goals and 35 assists in just 20 games last season. Her outstanding performance earned her the Tewaaraton Award, considered the Heisman Trophy of college lacrosse, and she is once again a finalist for the prestigious honor this year.

Scane’s record-breaking feat against Denver marked Northwestern’s third victory over the team in less than a year, following a 15-7 win in the national semifinals on May 26 and a 14-10 triumph in a rematch on March 8. With their sights set on the NCAA quarterfinals, the Wildcats are poised to continue their winning streak and advance further in the tournament.

Noteworthy among Scane’s achievements was her five-goal performance in a crucial 14-12 victory over Penn State in the Big Ten tournament championship last weekend. This victory served as redemption for Northwestern, avenging a narrow 14-13 loss to the Nittany Lions earlier in the season on March 22.

As Izzy Scane continues to make history and lead Northwestern with her exceptional skills, the lacrosse world eagerly awaits her future accomplishments and the impact she will undoubtedly have on the sport.
