Judge Merchan Addresses Social Media Hoax
Recently, Judge Merchan sent a letter to all parties involved in a case regarding a social media post that claimed a juror leaked information about Donald Trump’s conviction. The post, which surfaced on the New York Court System Facebook page, caused quite a stir.
The post read, “My cousin is a juror and says Trump is getting convicted. Thank you folks for all your hard work!!!!” However, upon closer inspection, it became apparent that the post was likely a hoax orchestrated by an Internet troll.
MSNBC’s Katie Phang pointed out that the post was made ten days before the verdict, long before the jury even deliberated. Additionally, the poster’s Facebook profile described them as “a professional shit poster,” casting further doubt on the legitimacy of the claim.
Assuming this is the same “Michael Anderson,” I don’t think that the post is real. It also looks like it was made on May 20th. Trump’s verdict didn’t come in until ten days later on May 30th. Plus, the poster’s FB profile says: “a professional shit poster”. pic.twitter.com/YmnVbl6omM — Katie Phang (@KatiePhang) June 7, 2024
This incident is likely to be exploited by Donald Trump to further his claims of a rigged trial, playing right into the hands of the troll behind the post. While it’s crucial to proceed with caution in such high-profile cases, one might question whether more thorough investigation should have been conducted before alerting all parties involved.
Social media is rife with misinformation, and giving credence to hoaxes only exacerbates the issue. In this case, it seems that the post about the juror leaking information was nothing more than a fabrication.
