Artturi Lehkonen’s Last-Second Overtime Goal Lifts Colorado Avalanche Over Edmonton Oilers

Artturi Lehkonen scored with just one second remaining in overtime to secure a 3-2 victory for the Colorado Avalanche against the Edmonton Oilers on Saturday. The intense battle saw Nathan MacKinnon assisting Lehkonen’s 12th goal of the season, extending MacKinnon’s points streak to an impressive 15 games. Sean Walker contributed with both goals in regulation for the Avalanche, who stretched their winning streak to six games.

Game Highlights

The matchup started with a scoreless first period where both teams were cautious. The Edmonton Oilers managed 10 shots on Avalanche goalie Alexandar Georgiev, while the Colorado Avalanche directed seven shots on Oilers starter Stuart Skinner. The second period saw the Avalanche break the deadlock midway through when a turnover opened up an opportunity for Walker to score his seventh goal of the season, marking his first goal as a member of the Avalanche. Colorado continued their strong performance, boasting a 25-1-3 record when leading after 40 minutes.

Exciting Third Period

Edmonton appeared to have tied the game early in the third period, but a video review deemed it a kicked-in goal by Zach Hyman. However, the Oilers managed to level the score at 5:46 into the third as Warren Foegele tipped in an Evan Bouchard shot for his 16th goal of the campaign. Shortly after, with 8:12 left to play, Sam Carrick put the Oilers ahead with his ninth goal of the season, assisted by Corey Perry, who reached his 900th career point. The Colorado Avalanche responded with Walker’s second goal of the night, tying the game 2-2 and ultimately pushing the game into overtime.

Final Moments and More

Despite a fantastic opportunity for the Edmonton Oilers early in overtime, Georgiev denied Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, setting the stage for Lehkonen’s game-winning goal. Notably, it was the first of three meetings between the two teams with Colorado sweeping Edmonton in the third round of the 2021-2022 Stanley Cup playoffs. The Edmonton Oilers will face the Montreal Canadiens next, while the Colorado Avalanche will close out their road trip in St. Louis.

  • NOTE: Colorado welcomed back Zach Parise, Lehkonen, and Drouin after minor injuries. Both Cale Makar and Miles Wood overcame illness to play.
  • UP NEXT: Avalanche play in St. Louis; Oilers host the Montreal Canadiens.
