Michael Cohen’s Revelations About Journalists

During his cross-examination, Michael Cohen revealed that MSNBC’s Katy Tur was one of the journalists with whom he had a close relationship and to whom he fed stories about Trump. Cohen admitted that he would give tips and scoops to journalists like Haberman if it was a “NYT-style” story. When asked why he recorded conversations with reporters, Cohen explained that it was for note-taking and later reference to craft responses.

Earlier in Cohen’s testimony, Maggie Haberman was also implicated as a puppet or stenographer for Trump. Cohen’s strategy involved cultivating close relationships with journalists to shape coverage in a pro-Trump manner. This tactic is known as corporate media access journalism, where information is exchanged for favorable coverage.

Notably, Nancy Pelosi criticized Tur, referring to her as a Trump apologist. Tur gained recognition at MSNBC for her coverage of Trump’s 2016 campaign. Cohen’s revelations raise concerns about the objectivity of journalists who form close bonds with sources that could impact their reporting.

The Role of Journalists

True journalism requires impartiality and integrity. Journalists are supposed to research and report facts objectively, without allowing personal relationships to influence their coverage. Engaging in quid pro quo arrangements with sources compromises the credibility of news outlets and skews the narrative in favor of individuals or entities like Donald Trump.
