Spoilers of the Week: July 8th
Similar to Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities, this new anthology series comes from Indonesian filmmaker Joko Anwar, known for his work on Satan’s Slaves: Communion. The show comprises seven episodes that follow a group of ordinary individuals as they encounter mysterious events that may shed light on the origins of humanity and its impending future. The synopsis promises interwoven characters and plots that form an awe-inspiring big picture.
Illustrated in the teaser trailer, the stories in Nightmares & Daydreams span multiple time periods, ranging from the distant past to the far-off future. Viewers can expect to delve into themes such as cults, enigmatic clock towers, individuals trapped in haunting houses, and insidious subliminal messaging. The series also boasts a cast of familiar faces, including Ario Bayu and Marissa Anita, who have previously collaborated with Anwar on various projects.
The inception of Nightmares & Daydreams was first announced in 2022, with Anwar expressing his enthusiasm for Indonesia’s rich tapestry of unique and extraordinary tales. The director aimed to create a series that resonates with Indonesian audiences while exploring political and social issues through a sci-fi supernatural lens. Indonesia has produced its share of compelling horror narratives, each offering a distinct perspective on the genre.
Viewers can experience Nightmares & Daydreams for themselves when it premieres on Netflix on June 14. Stay tuned for a chilling journey into the depths of fear and fantasy.
