The Future of MonsterVerse: What’s Next After Godzilla x Kong?

Following the release of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire over a month ago, fans have been eagerly anticipating what Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures have in store for the next installment in the MonsterVerse. Speculation has been abound as to whether the two iconic monsters will have separate adventures or another epic crossover.

Green Light for the Next MonsterVerse Movie

According to a report by the Hollywood Reporter, the studios have officially given the green light for the upcoming MonsterVerse movie. While details remain scarce, it has been confirmed that the film will serve as a successor to New Empire, although it is not explicitly referred to as Godzilla x Kong 3.

The screenplay for this highly anticipated film is being written by David Callaham, known for his work on Marvel films such as Shang-Chi and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Callaham was also responsible for the early draft of Godzilla’s 2014 reboot, which interestingly enough will celebrate its tenth anniversary next week on the 16th. However, the directorial seat for the project is still up in the air.

Determination of the Director

Adam Wingard, who directed both New Empire and Godzilla vs. Kong, does not currently have a contract in place for the new MonsterVerse movie. While he is set to helm an original film titled Onslaught for A24 later this year, it remains uncertain if he will return to direct another installment in the MonsterVerse franchise. Wingard is also occupied with a Face/Off sequel and a Thundercats movie, both of which he is slated to direct. In the event that Wingard is unavailable, Legendary Pictures is expected to consider other directorial candidates moving forward.

The success of New Empire cannot be understated, having grossed approximately $555 million since its release, making it the second highest-grossing film of 2024 and the most financially successful Godzilla film to date. With such financial success, the franchise shows no signs of slowing down, with plans for additional films, a Monarch TV series, and potential spin-offs.

As fans eagerly await the next chapter in the MonsterVerse, the overarching goal appears to be maintaining the momentum and success seen thus far.
