OpenAI to Introduce AI-Powered Search Engine Competitor to Google
OpenAI is reportedly preparing to unveil its artificial intelligence-driven search engine competitor to Google as early as Monday, a move that could potentially challenge Google’s long-standing dominance in the search engine industry. The announcement, as reported by Reuters from undisclosed sources familiar with the matter, is strategically timed to precede Google’s annual I/O conference, where Google is anticipated to introduce its own lineup of AI-powered products.
This forthcoming AI-powered search engine by OpenAI will build upon the foundation of ChatGPT, OpenAI’s AI chatbot, empowering users to scour the internet through the chatbot interface and receive responses backed by cited sources. Bloomberg further revealed that this new product aims to position itself as a contender against AI search engine startup, Perplexity.
The Information disclosed that OpenAI’s AI search engine will integrate Microsoft Bing’s capabilities, potentially offering enhanced speed compared to ChatGPT. Despite these developments, OpenAI has yet to issue an official comment or statement regarding this initiative.
Past Endeavors and Current Shift in Landscape
In the past, OpenAI had experimented with providing ChatGPT access to real-time web information through specialized plugins. However, this service was later retired in April. Concurrently, Google acknowledges the evolving landscape of its search engine dominance within the backdrop of the thriving AI ecosystem.
In an audio recording obtained by CNBC, Prabhakar Raghavan, Google’s senior vice president overseeing search, ads, commerce, and payments, highlighted the changing dynamics in the market. He emphasized the need for agility and swiftness in response to emerging market forces, cautioning that sustained success is not a guarantee.
As of February, Google commanded a staggering 92% share of the search engine market, a position it has maintained for over a decade according to statistics from Oberlo. This meteoric market share underscores Google’s entrenched position, albeit amid intensifying competition from emerging AI-driven contenders.
