The Impact of New Orioles Owner, David Rubenstein, at Camden Yards
On a recent Friday night at Camden Yards, the newly appointed owner of the Baltimore Orioles, David Rubenstein, made a surprising and exciting appearance in the “Splash Zone” in left field. This area is known for dousing fans with water in celebration after significant plays during the game. Rubenstein took charge of the hose in the bottom of the second inning against the Arizona Diamondbacks, and the Orioles promptly scored two runs, eventually securing a 4-2 victory.
Manager Brandon Hyde remarked on the crowd’s reaction to Rubenstein’s involvement, stating, “The crowd went crazy. We could hear it. It’s a direct line for us in front of our dugout, so you could see the energy out there, it was on the jumbotron. I just think it’s awesome. It’s awesome what he’s doing.”
Additionally, in homage to the typical Sprayer at the stadium, a giveaway of Mr. Splash bobbleheads was organized for the fans in attendance. It is customary for the Orioles to have special guests handle the fan spraying on occasion, and Rubenstein’s unexpected participation added to the excitement of the evening. Following his appearance, Ryan Mountcastle and Anthony Santander each hit singles, and Jordan Westburg contributed with a crucial double that brought home a run. Cedric Mullins followed with an RBI groundout, further extending the Orioles’ lead to 2-0.
The atmosphere in the stadium was electric, with fans enjoying both the game action and the additional entertainment of the spraying festivities, despite the drizzly weather. Manager Hyde expressed his admiration for Rubenstein’s willingness to engage with the fans, stating, “To be able to show his personality and being out there with the fans, I just think it’s fantastic.”
