Paris Saint-Germain Struggle to Pay Kylian Mbappé’s Bonuses
Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) is facing difficulties in paying star player Kylian Mbappé his bonuses and two months’ worth of wages for 2024, sources have revealed. This financial issue has intensified Mbappé’s recent comments expressing his unhappiness with the club.
During a news conference on Tuesday, Mbappé openly stated that certain individuals within PSG had made him feel “unhappy.” This press appearance marked his first since completing a free transfer to Real Madrid.
Sources close to the situation disclosed to ESPN on Wednesday that PSG considers Mbappé’s remarks as “ungrateful.” In response, the club has decided not to fulfill the outstanding payment of €80 million ($86 million) in wages and bonuses, aiming to recover these funds following Mbappé’s departure, which was reportedly agreed upon in August.
According to insiders, Mbappé is seeking compensation for the missed bonuses and wages from February to May, with June’s payment still pending. PSG’s stance contradicts the player’s claim that the club had indicated he would not feature in the 2023-24 season once his departure was confirmed.
Despite the ongoing dispute, sources emphasized that PSG has made considerable efforts over the past seven years to ensure Mbappé’s satisfaction. The club has denied allegations that Mbappé was explicitly told he would not play again during the season, stressing that they had prioritized his well-being and happiness.
Mbappé’s Strained Relationship with PSG
Last summer, Mbappé clashed with PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi regarding a contract extension. The player credited manager Luis Enrique and sporting director Luis Campos for their support, highlighting their pivotal role in his career.
Reflecting on the situation, Mbappé stated, “The club made it clear that I wouldn’t play, they were direct and forceful. Luis Enrique and Luis Campos were my saviors. Playing for the team was a source of immense pride, but I am determined to achieve more next season.”
Looking ahead, PSG is planning a new project centered on collective strength, as outlined by sources familiar with the club’s strategy.
Challenges Await Mbappé at Real Madrid
Former Real Madrid midfielder Steve McManaman shared insights on Mbappé’s move during a segment on “ESPN FC Daily.” McManaman predicted that winning over the fans might prove challenging for the French forward due to past events.
McManaman remarked, “Mbappé must impress from the start. His decision to join Real Madrid two years ago, only to retract at the last moment, adds complexity. However, this arrival coincides with the team’s recent success, presenting a pivotal moment for both the club and the player.”
He added, “To reach the pinnacle of his career, Mbappé must outperform players like Vinícius Júnior, who is a strong candidate for the Ballon d’Or, and Jude Bellingham. Setting higher goals and delivering exceptional performances will be crucial for Mbappé’s success.”
