Raspberry Pi Introduces AI Kit for Raspberry Pi 5

Micro-computer developer Raspberry Pi has announced the addition of artificial intelligence capabilities to its latest motherboard model. The Raspberry Pi Foundation revealed that the new AI Kit, developed in collaboration with artificial intelligence processor developer Hailo, is now available for the Raspberry Pi 5 at a price of $70.

The Raspberry Pi AI Kit aims to enhance the functionality of the Raspberry Pi 5, allowing it to run various AI models, including chatbots, object recognition, and pose detection when a camera is attached. Naushir Patuck, Senior Principal Engineer at Raspberry Pi, expressed excitement about the product, stating, “If you’ve ever wanted to experiment with the world of neural networks, artificial intelligence, and machine learning on your Raspberry Pi 5, we have the perfect product for you.”

Features of the AI Kit

The AI Kit comes preassembled with a Hailo-8L “entry-level” AI accelerator module, designed to support products that require limited AI capacity or lower performance. By connecting to the Raspberry Pi 5 motherboard using an M.2 HAT+ adapter, the AI Kit can run independently of the Raspberry Pi motherboard.

Users will need to configure the Raspberry Pi OS to take full advantage of the AI add-on. Once set up, the Raspberry Pi can automatically detect the Hailo module, making the Neural Processing Unit available for AI computing tasks.

Hailo’s Contribution

Established in 2017, Tel Aviv-based Hailo specializes in developing AI hardware, accelerators, and systems for various applications, including autonomous vehicles and generative AI models. In April, Hailo concluded a $120 million funding round, coinciding with the launch of its latest AI accelerator, the Hailo-10.

Orr Danon, CEO and co-founder of Hailo, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership with Raspberry Pi, stating, “We are thrilled to support Raspberry Pi and empower its vibrant community of professional engineers and creative makers with cutting-edge AI capabilities.”

The collaboration between Raspberry Pi and Hailo aims to inspire a new era of computing, enhanced by high-performance AI processing capacity. Both the Raspberry Pi Foundation and Hailo are looking forward to the positive impact this AI integration will have on the Raspberry Pi community.
