Former 1/6 Committee Chair Rep. Bennie Thompson Responds to Trump’s Capitol Visit

Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS), the former chair of the 1/6 Committee, had strong words for former President Donald Trump following his return to the Capitol. Thompson urged Trump to “go back to Mar-a-Lago and wait for his felony sentencing.”

In a statement provided to PoliticusUSA, Rep. Thompson expressed outrage at Trump’s presence in the halls of Congress. “After inciting a deadly insurrection that defiled the halls of Congress, how dare Trump show his face on these grounds?” Thompson said.

The congressman criticized Congressional Republicans for allowing Trump to visit, emphasizing that Trump has shown no respect for democracy. “Since January 6th, Donald Trump, a twice-impeached convicted felon, has repeatedly doubled down on his disrespect for the rule of law and continues to sow hate and division,” Thompson added.

Thompson highlighted the ongoing threat that Trump poses to democracy, stating that the former president should return to Mar-a-Lago and await his sentencing.

Democrats’ Response and Biden Campaign Ad

The general reaction from Democrats to Trump’s Capitol visit was one of concern. Many stated that Trump’s presence posed a threat to democracy and that Republicans were enabling his behavior. The Biden campaign even released an ad targeting swing state voters, reminding them of Trump’s actions on January 6th, 2021.

It is clear that Democrats are unwilling to normalize Trump’s behavior. Despite his status as a former president, Trump’s felony conviction sets him apart. He is viewed as a threat to the country and its democratic institutions.

Rep. Thompson’s remarks resonated with many, emphasizing that Trump remains a danger to democracy. The congressman warned that Trump’s desperation for power has only increased since his conviction.

Democrats are urged to continue highlighting Trump’s actions and character during the campaign. The focus should be on reminding voters of the risks associated with a potential return to power for the convicted felon.

In conclusion, it is evident that Donald Trump’s visit to the Capitol was met with criticism and concern. The call for Trump to return to Mar-a-Lago and face his sentencing reflects the sentiment that he is a threat that must be addressed.
