St. Louis City Goalkeeper Expects Marco Reus to Join MLS
St. Louis City goalkeeper Roman Bürki has revealed that he anticipates his former Borussia Dortmund teammate Marco Reus will make a move to Major League Soccer, either during this summer’s transfer window or by next year. Bürki, who has been in contact with Reus, is actively trying to persuade him to join the second-year expansion team.
“I talked to Marco Reus ahead of the Champions League game. I texted him, and although we didn’t discuss the move then because he was obviously focused on the game, I believe Major League Soccer has a very good chance of seeing him next year or in the summer,” Bürki told ESPN.
“I can’t say which team he might join. I’m still trying to convince him, but ultimately, it will be up to [sporting director] Lutz [Pfannenstiel] and [club owner] Carolyn [Kindle] to make the final decision.”
Bürki even expressed his willingness to give up the captain’s armband if that would facilitate Reus’s arrival at St. Louis City. The club is reportedly one of the MLS sides pursuing the Borussia Dortmund attacker, whose contract is set to expire soon. While talks are still in the early stages, sources have confirmed that St. Louis City remains in contention.
Coach Bradley Carnell’s Perspective
St. Louis City head coach Bradley Carnell described the potential reunion of Bürki and Reus as a “fairytale.” However, he also emphasized the need for caution when it comes to transfer rumors.
“Every time the transfer window opens, whether it involves our club or not, numerous names are thrown into the mix. We’ve been linked with many players, both for immediate transfers and for the future,” Carnell explained to ESPN.
“We assess each situation and determine its viability. While the Marco Reus rumors are flattering, and it would undoubtedly be exciting for the league and our team, we are still in the process of evaluating our options. At this point, there’s nothing concrete to report regarding the Marco Reus speculation, but the transfer window is approaching.”
Club Owner’s Reaction
St. Louis City owner Carolyn Kindle acknowledged the buzz surrounding the club and the potential acquisition of Marco Reus.
“It’s truly incredible to be linked with a player of Reus’s caliber. However, it can be challenging to distinguish between fact and fiction in the midst of these rumors,” Kindle admitted.
“I sometimes reach out to inquire about the validity of these reports. I had anticipated it would take us three to five years to reach a point where we would be associated with such high-profile figures, yet here we are in our second year, and the rumors are astounding. The people of St. Louis are thrilled.”
While the specific MLS team remains undisclosed, Bürki remains confident that Reus will soon be plying his trade in the United States following Borussia Dortmund’s defeat in the 2024 Champions League Final to Real Madrid.
