Sheffield United’s Unwanted Record in the Premier League

Sheffield United recently set an unfortunate record in the Premier League for the most goals conceded by a team in a single season. Abdoulaye Doucouré’s goal for Everton added to their tally, pushing it to 101 goals against, surpassing Swindon Town’s record of 100 goals conceded in the 1994-95 season, which featured 22 teams.

Rough Season for Sheffield United

Chris Wilder’s team, who were already relegated from the Premier League last month following a heavy defeat to Newcastle, had previously broken the record for the most goals conceded in a 38-game Premier League season. Sheffield United endured a series of significant losses both at home and away throughout the season.

  • An 8-0 home defeat to Newcastle in September
  • A 5-0 loss to Burnley away in December
  • A 6-0 defeat at home to Arsenal in March

During the match against Arsenal, Sheffield United conceded five goals within the first 40 minutes of play. Despite these challenges, the team managed to avoid finishing with the lowest points tally in Premier League history. The record for the lowest points accumulated in a 38-game season is still held by Derby County with 11 points in the 2007-08 season.

Looking Towards the Future

Although the team has had a tough season, manager Chris Wilder does not plan to resign from his role. He aims to be part of the rebuilding process at Bramall Lane. Wilder took over as Sheffield United manager in December, succeeding Paul Heckingbottom, who had guided the club to promotion from the Championship the previous season.
