Starmus Festival 2024: Uniting Art, Music, and Science
The highly anticipated Starmus festival is set to commence on May 12, featuring a remarkable roster of guest speakers and performers. Among them are iconic Queen guitarist and festival co-founder Brian May, as well as celebrated French composer and performance artist Jean-Michel Jarre. This biannual event uniquely merges art, music, and science to elevate science communication and provoke contemplation on “the most pressing questions of our era,” as articulated by Starmus.
A Holistic Experience
Each iteration of the festival revolves around a distinct theme and encompasses a diverse array of activities such as talks, debates, panel discussions, exhibitions, concerts, and film screenings. This year’s Starmus, themed “The Future of Our Home Planet,” assembles over 50 eminent experts in fields including climate change, environmental science, artificial intelligence, and cybersecurity in Bratislava, Slovakia. The event, spanning from May 12 to May 17, 2024, promises to be intellectually enriching and thought-provoking.
The distinguished lineup boasts luminaries like Nobel Prize laureates Michel Mayor, Emmanuelle Charpentier, and Kip Thorne, renowned astronauts Charlie Duke, Chris Hadfield, Kathryn Thornton, and Garrett Reisman, as well as esteemed primatologist and anthropologist Jane Goodall.
Notably, during the festival, the prestigious Stephen Hawking Medal for Science Communication will be awarded across four categories: Music & Arts, Science Writing, Films & Entertainment, and Lifetime Achievement. Established in 2015 by Stephen Hawking, Alexei Leonov, Brian May, and Garik Israelian, this accolade recognizes individuals and teams that have significantly contributed to science communication. Past recipients include luminaries like Jane Goodall, Elon Musk, Neil deGrasse Tyson, Jean-Michel Jarre, Brian Eno, Hans Zimmer, and the producers of the Apollo 11 documentary.
Enriching Beyond the Main Program
In addition to the main festival, the Starmus Camp and City Program will extend the scientific discourse to the streets of Bratislava. This initiative features a morning schedule of talks, presentations, and screenings at the city’s central square, Hlavné námestie. Attendees can explore twelve science exhibition booths and engage in panel discussions, music performances, all open to the public free of charge.
Furthermore, the seventh edition of Starmus promises a week filled with inspiring talks, educational sessions, musical performances, and interactive science activities. The aim is to nurture and educate the next generation of innovators while reviving the spirit of exploration and curiosity. Tickets for the event are available via ticketportal, and the complete program can be viewed on the official Starmus website.
