Suzanne Collins Announces New Hunger Games Prequel

Suzanne Collins is set to explore Panem once again with a new prequel to the Hunger Games series. Following the success of Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, the author is diving back into the dystopian world she created.

The Concept Behind “Sunrise on the Reaping”

Announced by Scholastic through the Associated Press, the new book, titled “Sunrise on the Reaping,” will take place between the events of Ballad and the original Hunger Games. It will focus on the reaping, the process of selecting district candidates for the 50th Hunger Games battle royale.

In a statement, Collins explained her inspiration for the story: “With ‘Sunrise on the Reaping,’ I was inspired by David Hume’s idea of implicit submission and the power of propaganda. The narrative explores the control exerted by a few over the majority, raising questions about reality and perception.”

Exploring the 50th Hunger Games

The 50th Hunger Games, which occurred 24 years before the events of the original novel, were won by Haymitch Abernathy. This character later became a mentor to Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark, playing a crucial role in the rebellion against the Capitol.

While film rights for “Sunrise on the Reaping” have not been confirmed, fans speculate that another Hunger Games movie could be on the horizon. The previous films starred Woody Harrelson as the older Haymitch.

“Sunrise on the Reaping” is scheduled for release on March 18, 2025, offering fans a new perspective on the beloved series.
