The Hosting of 2026 FIFA World Cup Matches in Toronto

The city of Toronto has received a significant financial boost from the federal government in the form of $104 million to aid in hosting six matches at the prestigious 2026 FIFA World Cup. This announcement was made by Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow and federal Sports Minister Carla Qualtrough during a press conference at Toronto’s BMO Field, the designated venue for the matches.

Funding Breakdown and Commitment

According to Toronto’s estimates, the total cost of hosting the World Cup matches in the city is projected to be $380 million, an increase of $80 million from previous forecasts for the 2022 event. In addition to the federal contribution, the provincial government had previously pledged $97 million towards the initiative in February.

In a statement following the funding announcement, Mayor Olivia Chow expressed gratitude for the support, emphasizing the positive impact it will have on Toronto’s ability to successfully host the FIFA World Cup. She highlighted the anticipated benefits, stating, “This support will help Toronto host a winning FIFA World Cup in 2026 and showcase our city to the world.”

Economic and Cultural Impact

The hosting of the World Cup is expected to yield significant economic and cultural benefits for Toronto. The city anticipates that the event will create over 3,500 jobs, draw in approximately 300,000 visitors from outside the region, and contribute around $393 million to Toronto’s gross domestic product (GDP). Furthermore, Ontario is forecasted to see an increase of $456 million in GDP as a result of the tournament.
