Updates on Toronto Blue Jays’ Top Pitching Prospects

Amid a series of injuries affecting some of the Toronto Blue Jays’ most promising pitching prospects, the team released a set of updates regarding three pitchers on Monday afternoon.

Ricky Tiedemann

The Blue Jays’ number one prospect, Ricky Tiedemann, is scheduled to visit team doctors in Toronto later this week following his placement on the seven-day injured list last Thursday. The 21-year-old left-handed pitcher underwent an MRI on his throwing elbow, which led to his placement on the injured list. Further steps regarding Tiedemann’s recovery will be decided following his trip to Toronto. Tiedemann had participated in three games this season with the triple-A Buffalo affiliate, where he recorded a 5.63 ERA and 10 strikeouts over eight innings of work.

Brandon Barriera

Meanwhile, 2022 first-round draft pick Brandon Barriera is set to consult with Dr. Keith Meister this week to assess his injured elbow. The Blue Jays’ fourth-ranked prospect exited his first start of the 2024 season for the low-A Dunedin Blue Jays on April 6 during the second inning. Barriera, a 20-year-old left-handed pitcher, had pitched 1.1 innings, allowing two hits and one run. Subsequently, he was charged with an additional run after a baserunner he permitted crossed home plate. Barriera was selected by the Blue Jays 23rd overall in the 2022 MLB Draft, and his 2023 debut season was limited to only 20.1 innings due to injuries.

Dr. Meister, an orthopedic surgeon based in Texas, is renowned for his expertise in treating pitchers requiring Tommy John surgery.

Landen Maroudis

The final update concerns right-hander Landen Maroudis, whom the Blue Jays drafted in the fourth round of the 2023 draft. The 19-year-old pitcher departed his start for low-A Dunedin on Sunday after only two innings of play. Maroudis is scheduled to undergo an MRI on his forearm. Entering the year as Toronto’s twelfth prospect, Maroudis had an impressive beginning to the season, yielding just one run and three hits across 10.2 innings, while recording 12 strikeouts.
