Aaron Sanchez Shows Promise in Triple-A Start
Right-handed pitcher Aaron Sanchez continues his journey back to the majors with another strong performance for triple-A Buffalo. After signing a minor-league contract with the Toronto Blue Jays last month, Sanchez delivered six solid innings on Friday night, helping the Bisons secure a 5-2 victory over the Lehigh Valley IronPigs.
Hailing from Barstow, California, the 31-year-old pitcher allowed only two hits and one run, a home run by Nick Podkul in the third inning. Sanchez showcased his skills with five strikeouts and two walks, improving his record to 2-2 with a 9.00 ERA over five starts in the minor leagues.
Selected by the Blue Jays in the first round of the 2010 draft, Sanchez played a vital role in the team’s rotation during their playoff appearances in 2015 and 2016. His standout season came in 2016 when he achieved a career-high of 15 wins, earned an All-Star Game selection, and finished seventh in the American League Cy Young Award voting.
Despite being plagued by injuries, Sanchez last pitched in the majors in 2022 with the Minnesota Twins, amassing a record of 38-38, a 4.16 ERA, and 541 strikeouts over eight seasons.
Erik Swanson’s Relief Efforts
Meanwhile, right-handed reliever Erik Swanson also contributed to Buffalo’s victory by holding the line in a shutout inning of work during the eighth. Despite his struggles this season with a 9.22 ERA and 10 strikeouts over 13.2 innings, Swanson showed glimpses of his past reliability. He had been a key reliever for the Blue Jays last year before being optioned to Buffalo on May 28.
