The Alaska Air National Guard’s Preparedness

As the months progress, concerns arise regarding the Alaska Air National Guard’s ability to effectively defend the West Coast against potential Russian threats. Brigadier General Blaine “Blaino” Holt (USAF-Ret.), a former deputy U.S. military representative to NATO and co-founder of the nonprofit Restore Liberty, expressed shock at the public disclosure of the restructuring of the Alaska Air National Guard. Holt emphasized the importance of confidential discussions for strategic strength and operational execution.

Erosion of Capabilities

Recent reports indicate a significant degradation in air defense and combat search and rescue capabilities in Alaska. By June, a 40 percent reduction in air refueling capacity and a 60 percent decrease in combat search and rescue capabilities are anticipated. Furthermore, the Air National Guard may experience a 50 percent decline in its space warning mission by October. These developments raise concerns about the nation’s overall security preparedness.

Critical Oversight and Decision Making

Holt questioned the decision-making process behind the restructuring, particularly the concept of “cross-leveling.” He criticized the potential relocation of Active Guard and Reserve (AGR) positions without proper strategic consideration. Holt emphasized the need for effective oversight from the Biden administration and the Department of Defense (DOD) to address operational deficiencies and ensure national security.

Financial Considerations

Highlighting the substantial financial investment in national security, Holt underscored the importance of adequate defense spending to support operational requirements. He called for congressional scrutiny of the budget allocations to the Guard and the Air Force to address operational shortcomings and maintain national defense readiness.

Strategic Concerns

Holt raised concerns about the implications of reducing defense capabilities, particularly in response to potential Russian threats. He emphasized the need for a strategic approach to allocating resources based on specific state security needs. Holt voiced apprehension over compromising border defense amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions.

Congressional Accountability and Resolution

Calling on responsible lawmakers to engage with the DOD and the National Guard Bureau, Holt urged for a critical evaluation of the decisions impacting national security. He emphasized the importance of strategic planning and collaboration between government entities to address operational challenges effectively.

A proposed minimum two-year pause in the conversion of AGR positions aims to facilitate comprehensive analysis of the National Guard Bureau’s decision-making process and its potential repercussions on operational readiness.
