Generative artificial intelligence (AI) art represents what Ismail Tazisaoud, the founder of TRAME design studio, calls “the contemporary movement of our time.” Despite AI’s innovative nature, TRAME seeks to harmonize it with the human touch found in traditional craftsmanship, as Tazisaoud shared with Decrypt’s SCENE.

The studio recently showcased its work in Paris, where it introduced the “Generative Interiors” concept within an apartment in the exclusive Place des Vosges. This concept seamlessly integrated traditional crafts with digital design, creating a unique visual experience.

Tazisaoud expressed, “We aimed to showcase this art within an interior setting, allowing individuals to envision these pieces within their homes instantaneously.” TRAME’s “vision for the future of interior design” was vividly illustrated through its Craft Nouveau collections, featuring the works of esteemed designers Martin Grasser, Jeff Davis, Alexis André, and ArandaLasch in its Gallery Space. These designers employ generative art tools that are specifically calibrated to their traditional crafts practices, encompassing skills such as cane weaving, stained glass work, and physical looms.

Integrating Craftsmanship and AI:

Tazisaoud highlighted the studio’s approach, stating, “With what I term generative craft, we begin with the physical realm. The code is driven by the physical constraints of the craft.” This methodology ensures that artists engage both physically and digitally in the creative process. By crafting a code that translates into tangible forms like tapestries, sculptures, and mirrors, TRAME bridges the gap between tradition and innovation.

By marrying the physical limitations of traditional crafts with generative AI tools, Tazisaoud emphasized the dynamic interplay between both elements. Designers input their artistic vision, generating millions of unique outcomes which are then refined and meticulously handcrafted into the final product.

Preserving Craftsmanship Through Collaboration:

TRAME’s artists collaborated with skilled artisans in various craft centers to bring their visions to life. For instance, Alexis André collaborated with experienced cane weavers in Aubusson, a village with a rich six-century history in the craft, while Jeff Davis worked alongside the stained glass experts from Atelier Loire, known for restoring windows in iconic cathedrals like Notre-Dame and Chartres.

Tazisaoud underlined, “The dialogue between technology and craftsmanship is longstanding. We are merely carrying it forward.” He envisions a future where generative design streamlines the creation of collections comprising unique pieces effortlessly. Traditional design houses are already showing keen interest in TRAME’s innovative approach, as generative AI could potentially enable them to produce a thousand distinct chairs at the same cost as producing a thousand identical ones currently.

Democratizing Bespoke Design:

While TRAME’s offerings cater to a niche luxury clientele, Tazisaoud believes that generative art has the potential to democratize bespoke design and scale it to the mass market. He elaborated, “As generative art gains traction, we anticipate a surge in similar initiatives.” Tazisaoud even speculated on the possibility of IKEA offering a series of a million unique posters from the same collection at an affordable price point, marking a significant shift in the accessibility of custom design.

TRAME’s innovative approach to combining traditional crafts with generative AI not only showcases the evolving landscape of design but also opens up new possibilities for the future of interior aesthetics.
