An Insight into Microsoft’s AI Evolution
Scott’s email, directed to Microsoft’s CEO Satya Nadella and co-founder Bill Gates in 2019, discusses the disparities in model training capabilities between Microsoft and Google. Initially skeptical of OpenAI, DeepMind (acquired by Google in 2014), and Google Brain, Scott admits to gradually acknowledging their advancements upon realizing Microsoft’s struggle in replicating their natural language processing models.
Scott elucidates the challenges Microsoft faced in training models, citing the BERT language model as a case in point. While it took Microsoft approximately six months to train the model due to infrastructural limitations, Google had already ventured into more ambitious model development owing to its head start in implementing BERT. Scott notes Google’s AI achievements in enhancing features like auto-complete in Gmail, attributing it to BERT-like models and remarking on their impact on Google’s competitive edge.
Despite Microsoft housing skilled employees specialized in machine learning, Scott points out the inadequacy of deep learning teams within the organization and underscores the lag in scaling up to Google’s standards. His email, titled “Thoughts on OpenAI,” emphasizes Microsoft’s predicament of being “multiple years behind the competition in terms of ML scale,” thereby necessitating strategic alignment with entities like OpenAI.

In response to Scott’s email, Nadella concurs with the imperative for Microsoft to reinforce its AI capabilities by collaborating with OpenAI and places emphasis on the need for meticulous execution by the infrastructure team. This exchange underscores Microsoft’s strategic intent to bridge the technological gap with industry leaders like Google through comprehensive AI integration.
