Exciting Changes Announced for National Bank Open

One of Canada’s most significant tennis tournaments, the National Bank Open, is set to undergo major changes. Tennis Canada revealed a new era for the event, scheduled to debut in the summer of 2025. The tournament will feature a larger draw and an expanded schedule, promising an enhanced experience for players and fans alike.

Increased Participation and Extended Schedule

Starting next year, the main draw will include 96 singles players, a significant increase from the current 56. This expansion will provide more opportunities for athletes to compete and showcase their skills over the course of 12 days. Additionally, the doubles draw will grow from 28 teams to 32, adding to the excitement of the competition.

The upgraded format will elevate the National Bank Open to a select group of six extended combined events on the WTA and ATP Tours, bringing it closer in stature to a Grand Slam tournament.

Key Dates and Format

Next year’s tournaments in Toronto and Montreal will kick off with a one-day, 32-player qualifying event on July 26. The main draw is scheduled to begin on July 27 in both cities, with quarterfinals spread over Aug. 4 and Aug. 5. Semifinal matches will take place on Aug. 6, leading up to the women’s and men’s finals on Aug. 7.

Leylah Fernandez, currently ranked No. 33 on the WTA Tour and a rising star in Canadian tennis, expressed her enthusiasm for the changes. She stated, “As Canadians, it’s great to see our home event growing and improving. Playing at the National Bank Open in Montreal or Toronto is always a highlight of the year for me. I’m excited to witness the positive impact this new format will have on the fans, the cities, and Canadian tennis as a whole.”
