New Jersey Devils Search for New Head Coach

After a disappointing season that saw the New Jersey Devils miss the playoffs, General Manager Tom Fitzgerald is on the lookout for a new head coach. While interim coach Travis Green is under consideration, Fitzgerald is exploring other potential candidates to lead the team. The Devils aim to have a permanent coach in place before the NHL draft in late June.

Finding the Right Fit

Fitzgerald emphasized the importance of finding a coach who can effectively communicate with players while maintaining accountability. Green, who served as the interim coach after Lindy Ruff’s dismissal in March, is praised for his no-nonsense approach. However, Fitzgerald is open to considering other coaching options, with the possibility of new candidates emerging as the postseason progresses.

Reflecting on the team’s performance this season, it is evident that the Devils faced challenges compared to their successful previous year. With a record of 38-39-5 and finishing seventh in the Metropolitan Division, improvements are needed in various areas. Notably, the team’s goals against increased, while their goals for decreased, resulting in a significant differentiator in performance compared to the previous season.

Optimism for the Future

Despite the setbacks, both Fitzgerald and Green are optimistic about the team’s potential moving forward. With a roster featuring talented young players such as Jack Hughes, Nico Hischier, and Jesper Bratt, the Devils have a promising foundation. Additionally, the ownership’s support and commitment to facilitating necessary changes provide a solid backing for the team’s future endeavors.
