Procter & Gamble Recalls 8.2 Million Bags of Laundry Detergent Pods

Procter & Gamble has issued a recall for 8.2 million bags of laundry detergent pods due to concerns regarding defective packaging. The recall affects popular products such as Tide Pods, Gain Flings, Ace Pods, and Ariel Pods liquid laundry detergent packets, all of which were sold in flexible film bags.

The Consumer Product and Safety Commission announced that the bags in question have shown a tendency to split open near the resealable zipper track. This defect poses a significant risk of serious injury, particularly to children and other vulnerable populations, if the contents of the detergent packets are ingested. Additionally, there is a risk of skin or eye injuries associated with the defective packaging.

While there have been no confirmed cases directly linked to the packaging issue, Procter & Gamble has received four reports of children in the U.S. accessing the liquid laundry packets. Among these reports, three involved cases of ingestion during the period in which the recalled pods were on the market. It is unknown, however, whether the incidents were specifically tied to the recalled bags.

Next Steps for Customers

The commission has advised customers to take immediate action by safely securing the recalled bags out of reach of children. Individuals who have purchased the affected products are encouraged to contact Procter & Gamble to initiate a full refund process. In addition to the refund, consumers will receive a child-resistant bag to replace the potentially hazardous bags. Furthermore, customers can request a cabinet lock to ensure the secure storage of their laundry products.

To identify the recalled items, customers are instructed to locate the lot codes located at the bottom of the packaging. These codes can be cross-referenced on the official Procter & Gamble website at pg.com/bags. To participate in the recall, individuals can submit a photo of the lot code for verification purposes.

The recalled products encompass bags containing anywhere from 12 to 39 laundry detergent packets, all of which were manufactured between September 2023 and February 2024. The following laundry detergent pods are included on the recall list:

  • Gain Flings Original
  • Gain Flings Moonlight Breeze Scent
  • Gain Flings Blissful Breeze Scent
  • Gain Flings Spring Daydream Scent
  • Tide Simply Pods Plus Oxi Boost
  • Gain Flings Plus Ultra Oxi

  • Tide Pods Oxi
  • Tide Pods Ultra Oxi
  • Tide Pods Original
  • Tide Pods Spring Meadow Scent
