Record Number of Drug Shortages in 2024
2024 has already set a new record for the year with the highest number of ongoing drug shortages. According to the latest report by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), there are currently 323 active drug shortages, the highest number since tracking began in 2001.
The ASHP highlighted that both essential and life-saving medications are in short supply. The top five classes of drugs affected include central nervous system medications, antimicrobials, hormone agents, chemotherapies, and fluids and electrolytes. Notably, almost half of the drugs in limited supply (46%) are injectables, such as oxytocin, standard chemotherapy, pain and sedation medications, and ADHD drugs.
Reasons Behind the Shortages
The ASHP identified several factors contributing to the ongoing drug shortages in 2024. One significant issue is the changes in quota regulations by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA). In August, the DEA implemented a new process for manufacturers to receive their quota allotment, requiring them to submit production estimates and apply for allotments quarterly instead of annually. This regulatory change has impacted drug production and availability.
Furthermore, the report revealed that in 60% of cases, drug companies did not provide a specific reason for the shortages. Among the known reasons, failure to meet demand accounted for 14% of shortages, followed by business decisions and manufacturing issues at 12% each. Additionally, raw material shortages contributed to 2% of the overall drug shortages.
The release of this data coincides with recent efforts by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to address the issue of drug shortages. A white paper published by the department includes recommendations to Congress on preventing future shortages, such as establishing incentives for hospitals to maintain adequate drug supplies.
