Stefan Ortega Extends Contract with Manchester City
Manchester City has officially announced that German goalkeeper Stefan Ortega has signed a new contract that will keep him at the club until 2026. The one-year extension comes at a crucial time for the team, as doubts loom over the future of current first-choice goalkeeper Ederson.
Ortega, who joined City in 2022 from Arminia Bielefeld, has been a reliable presence in the squad, making 34 appearances over the past two seasons. His importance was highlighted last season when he stepped in for an injured Ederson and delivered a match-winning performance against Tottenham, helping City on their way to a fourth successive title.
Expressing his delight at the contract extension, Ortega stated, “I am delighted to be staying at Manchester City for longer. This is a football club that provides players with everything we need to be our best. Every single day I feel motivated and challenged, and I have improved as a goalkeeper since coming here two years ago.”
With his family settled in England and a strong connection to the club, Ortega is looking forward to focusing on the upcoming season. The 31-year-old goalkeeper’s commitment follows that of Scott Carson, the team’s third-choice goalkeeper, who recently signed a contract extension of his own.
Future of Ederson
Despite Ortega’s contract extension, uncertainties remain regarding Ederson’s future at the club. The Brazilian goalkeeper is reportedly a target for several Saudi Pro League clubs, raising the possibility of a summer transfer. City has indicated they will consider offers for Ederson should he express a desire to leave.
As the situation develops, City fans will be keeping a close eye on the goalkeeping position, knowing that both Ortega and Carson are ready to step up if called upon.
