Stephen Colbert’s Wit in Addressing Trump’s Racism

Stephen Colbert, a renowned late-night television host, cleverly weaved a joke about former President Trump’s racially charged rhetoric into his monologue. During a segment discussing Trump’s behavior in court, Colbert humorously remarked on the ex-president’s nodding off:

“Once the trial got underway, reporters noticed that Trump appeared to nod off a few times, his mouth going slack and his head drooping onto his chest. In fact, his lawyer passed him notes for several minutes before Trump appeared to jolt awake and notice them. ‘Whaaa! Oh, my god, I was having the most terrible dream that I had to read something. Oh, no! The dream was real! But if it’s real, then where’s the hamburger with b**bs?'”

Even before jury selection began, prosecutors raised concerns about Trump violating a gag order by criticizing potential witnesses on social media. They urged Judge Merchan to hold Trump in contempt and impose a fine of $3,000, to which Colbert quipped, “Only three K? But I guess that’s on brand for Trump. K, K, K.”

Trump’s Brand of Racism

Colbert’s humor in tackling Trump’s misconduct extends to highlighting the ex-president’s underlying racism. By pointing out that Trump’s anti-immigrant rhetoric is not about immigration itself but about immigrants of specific skin colors, Colbert sheds light on the bigotry at the core of Trump’s messaging.

He cleverly imagines a scenario where Trump’s reaction would differ if the immigrants were white British individuals, illustrating that racism, not immigration, is Trump’s true focus. Colbert emphasizes that Trump’s brand is built on espousing divisive and discriminatory views, urging Americans to unite against the harmful ideologies he perpetuates.
